Your Value Is Revealed by What You Refuse (4 Min. Read) Vol. 8

I have yet to meet an entrepreneur or high-level professional who hasn't gone a few rounds with the question of value. "What actually makes me different?" "Why should anyone choose me over everyone else selling something similar?"

Speaking as someone who knows, I'll warn you that this is a topic that swallows people whole. You can disappear down the rabbit hole of over-analysis on it, or worse, get stuck there indefinitely. It's not a kind subject for anyone wrestling with insecurity, or even a mild case of Imposter Syndrome. And yet, if you want your message to resonate deeply, earn trust, and move people to act, there is no way around it.

You must know your own value.

Here's the good news. Defining it requires the opposite of overthinking. All it really takes is a flicker of intuition. Light, fun, pure instinct. The kind you operated on naturally as a kid, before life trained you to overexplain yourself. You won't "create" your value by racking your brain for hours, scribbling on a coffee-stained page at 2 a.m. It already exists, whether you're paying attention to it or not. It IS you. The people closest to you probably see it every day. Your only job is to uncover it.

That work means peeling back the identity layers you have collected since you were a teenager. The stories you've told yourself, or been told, about how you're "supposed to" show up in the world may be blocking access to a truer, deeper essence underneath. That essence is what people "get" about you and your business. It's what they feel that makes them choose you. That is why you're different. That is your value.

Here's an idea. Instead of trying to figure out what you offer, start thinking about what you won't offer. Your boundaries have a way of cutting straight to the heart of how you actually add value. Here are a few of TRG's "won'ts," and what they say about us.

1. TRG won't show properties to buyers who refuse to prepare their finances for a purchase. Every single day, we get requests from people who want to walk through listings, but they're not interested in getting pre-approved, much less pre-underwritten. They wouldn't be in any position to act on a home even if they found the perfect one. Other agents might drop everything and drive 45 minutes to open the door for a stranger who's "just looking." We won't.

Our Value: We show our clients we respect their time by treating our own time as sacred.

2. TRG won't humor a seller who believes his home is worth $1MM more than it actually is. We will never tell people what they want to hear just to get a sign in the ground.

Our Value: Our clients can always trust what we tell them, because we've proven that honesty matters more to us than landing a listing. We stand by our fiduciary duty, even when it costs us opportunities in the short run.

3. TRG won't put its name on a product we can't present in a polished way. Some sellers, and some agents, are fine with grainy cell phone shots on the MLS. Some sellers refuse to stage their properties. Some sellers don't accept that cleaning and power washing matter before a home hits the market. That's okay. Those sellers simply are not our clients.

Our Value: Anyone in this community knows that when they list with TRG, their home will be presented in the most beautiful way possible. They know it not because we have told them in words, but because they can see we have never once put out a listing that broke that promise.

So many capable, ambitious people burn themselves out trying to prove they can do everything, handle anything, and be the perfect solution to every possible problem. Scarcity mindset whispers to them that if they don't operate this way, they will miss out on opportunities. And yes, saying "no" won't get you everything. But it will keep you aligned with what's actually meant for you, and with the people you were naturally built to serve at the highest level, simply by being yourself.
